Welcome to the website of the German-speaking Forum for Pastoral Economy and Biodiversity! There are a few pages also available in English.
We are a group of people committed to productive pastoral economy. Many of us work with grazing animals, many turn pasture milk into cheese, some have a corresponding study, some have published books connected with the topic. We support pastoral economy and point out its important role for biodiversity. We don’t want rangelands to fall victim to the profitable rewilding business focused on a few species rather than ecosystems.
We are independent of the official German IYRP group (called inappropriately “Bündnis für Weidewirtschaft und Hirtentum”), which has never been authorized by pastoralists to speak in their names. I think every single one of us is overqualified for that group. Those people have no understanding for productive pastoral economy but lobby for NGO pasture projects and the rewilding business. They treat pastoralists with aggressive paternalism, deciding from the office what the pastoralists are allowed to say – according to the needs of their capitalist sponsors. That group is in the hand of people without any experience with grazing animals.
In this forum, on the contrary, people who work with grazing animals and their products, have the possibility to speak for themselves. Pastoralists need to have a voice in the world without being silenced by lobbyists.
